PURPOSE
Determine key challenges in the BYU Idaho registration system, including why it is stressful, what makes users unhappy, and how can the experience be less complicated. This project is a redesign of the current BYU Idaho registration system and focuses on the basic steps a student must take to register for their upcoming courses.
MY ROLE
This project was completed with a group of five other people. Each member held a team role and individual roles. The team met twice a week to conduct team brainstorming and collaboration, then distributed assignments to be completed on an individual basis. My main role was assembling the interactive mockup together, implementing the style guide, and ensuring the flow created an effortless experience for the user.
TARGET AUDIENCE
BYU Idaho student who must register for upcoming courses. These individuals want to get a head start by scheduling their classes a few weeks before registration is open. The are generally proactive and like to use any University resource to help them have a productive college semester.
PROCESS
Each team member began by sketching their own idea of the “perfect” functionality for the system. We refined our ideas to make paper prototype and conducted a usability study on three different people. The first usability study we received a variety of results. As a group, we discussed the data and began designing as a team using elements that worked best in each individual design. We completed this iterative design and usability studying three additional times.
DESIGN SOLUTIONS
After multiple design iterations and discussions with our users, we decided the registration system needed to include a few key elements.
Courses sync directly with a tool called I-Plan (allows students to plan each semester in advance) while also allowing students to manually add courses not included in their I-Plan
Students can plan out their schedules before registration opens
Students can view important information, such as when registration opens for them and how many credits they have planned for
A calendar that allows them to visually see the day and time of their planned courses
KEY LEARNINGS
Working with a group of talented designers was incredible. I learned how to listen to and build upon other people’s ideas. Many times when we combined our usability study data, we would have different ideas on how to refine our design. It became crucial for us to listen and work through our differences. I believe we were able to accomplish more together than we would have been able to do on our own.
